Wednesday 22 January 2025, United Kingdom: Galloping across the white sands of a tropical beach at sunset is a bucket list dream for most equestrians. For four riders, that dream became a reality as they kicked off the New Year with an extraordinary adventure. On Sunday 5 January 2025, Gloucestershire-based Jamaican eventer Lydia Heywood journeyed to Morocco alongside her partner Omran Akbari and two lucky members of her diversity-focused equestrian organisation, Cool Ridings.
The five-day trip was offered to Lydia and her organisation as part of her ambassadorship with Cavago, the global technology company revolutionising how equestrians connect, discover, and book exceptional riding experiences. Cool Ridings members Jayda Everett and Christine Lewis secured their spots on this unforgettable journey through a social media competition, winning over judges with creative Instagram reel entries showcasing their passion for equestrianism.
Jayda shared, “It was a surreal moment when I got the message saying I’d be going. I felt so fortunate to have been picked. Morocco had been on my bucket list for a while, so being able to finally tick it off with a riding holiday no less was incredible.”
Exploring Morocco on Horseback
The adventure began with a flight from Gatwick to Marrakech, followed by a scenic transfer to Essaouira, a historic city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. From there, the group embarked on a 50km three-day trek that took them across beach, forest, and desert terrain, led by trusted Cavago host Yassine Cavalier—a renowned horseman and tour guide based in Diabat.
Yassine described the experience as truly special, saying: “It was a pleasure hosting Lydia’s group. Their visit was a memorable experience as they brought such enthusiasm and positive energy. For Christine, the trip was an incredible way to reignite her passion for riding:
“I’d already decided 2025 was going to be the year I reignited my passion for riding, and what better way to do it than in Morocco! The trek was amazing, from the varying terrain to the breathtaking views and the unforgettable feeling of flying across a beach. My most memorable moment had to be riding alongside a cliff. Though I was scared of heights, Yassine was so patient and positive, encouraging me to trust my horse. It was a lesson in confidence and my horse was incredible. I definitely learned a lot from this trip and would 100% do it again!”
Building Inclusive Opportunities Through Cool Ridings
The trip perfectly encapsulated the mission of Cool Ridings, a charitable organisation founded by Lydia Heywood to promote diversity and inclusion within equestrian sports. The organisation is dedicated to creating opportunities for riders from underrepresented backgrounds.
